  • Flood Damage: Quebec Government Financial Assistance After a Disaster

After a flood, Quebec’s Ministry of Public Security can compensate owners and tenants of a principal residence for certain damage not covered by insurance, when the disaster assistance program is activated for their municipality. Secondary residences are not covered. First contact your insurer and register as a disaster victim with your municipality.

    Order of steps

    1. Safety first: cut power if water nears outlets or the panel, if safe.
    2. Document: photos and videos of all damage before cleanup.
    3. Call your insurer: government aid complements insurance.
    4. Register as affected with your municipality.
    5. Apply to the Ministry of Public Security with the required documents.
    6. Dry out fast to limit mould, then repair.

    What the program may cover

    • Some damage to the principal residence and essential belongings
    • Temporary lodging costs during an evacuation
    • In some cases, measures to protect the home from imminent flooding

Amounts, exclusions and areas are set by the program and by decree for each event. Check with the Ministry of Public Security.

After the flood: protect for next time

A backwater valve and battery-backed sump pump greatly reduce backup risk. Rénoclimat’s new Adaptation stream helps fund them: see our guide. In Montreal, see also RénoPlex.
